Logan SPF 1000 Series Front of Engine Power Take-off (PTO) clutches supply on-demand connect/disconnect power to the hydraulic systems that run the deck winches and sailing equipment on the sailing yacht Hetairos   The Challenge The sailing yacht Hetairos is a 67m / 220ft carbon ketch built by Baltic Yachts and Dykstra & Partners naval architects. Originally launched in 2011, the vessel was overhauled in 2015. Built with a desire for both long distance cruising and competitive sailing, the design needed to balance power and weight. When Hetairos was completed in 2011, it was powered by 4 Volkswagen Engines, each contributing in some way to the hydraulics for propulsion via thrusters, hydraulics for deck and sailing equipment, and electrical generation. The control system for this arrangement was unable to reliably provide consistent power, leading to a number of blackouts and breakdowns. The Solution In 2015, Hetairos was refitted with 2 dedicated electric generators--one 75 kW exclusively for electricity and another 90 kW for electricity and some hydraulics. In addition, twin Scania 405 engines are now used to directly drive the thrusters. Most of the vessel’s hydraulics are powered off the front of the Scania 405’s with Hawe Hydraulik V30E pumps supplied with on-demand power via Logan SPF 1000 Series PTO clutches. Logan 600 Series Front of Engine Power Take-off (PTO) clutches supply on demand connect/disconnect power from John Deere 4045 engines to Kawasaki hydraulic pumps which run deck winches for towing/shiphandling   On-demand power The 64’9” (19.7m), 2000 hp (1491kW) North Arm Tempest built by North Vancouver-based ABD Boats is North Arm Transportation’s most powerful tug yet. Twin Cummins KTA-38 main engines provide propulsion through VZ-900 azimuthing drives from Veth Propulsion, a Twin Disc brand. These drives allow for free-running speeds of about 10.5 knots and towing speeds of about 8 knots. Auxiliary power is provided by twin John Deere 4045TFM85 74kW gensets supplied by Frontier Power of Delta, BC. Two SPF-600 series Logan Front of Engine Power Take-off (PTO) clutches provide on-demand connect/disconnect power from the front of John Deere 4045TFM85 engines to Kawasaki pumps that power the hydraulic systems. The winches running off this hydraulic system were built by Burrard Iron Works. Lower fuel consumption and emissions, less wear and tear, and easier maintenance Logan SPF-600 series clutches are actuated either pneumatically or hydraulically, transmitting up to 985 lb. ft. of torque. Logan Front Mount Brackets support the clutches. The clutches provide reliable power to the hydraulic system so that the North Arm Tempest can meet the demands of towing barges on the coast of British Columbia, including between Centerm in Vancouver and Duke Point

The Jingmei River pumping station in Taipei, Taiwan uses Logan Bell-Housing Power Take-off (PTO) Clutches driven by CAT C27 diesel engines to supply power to the water pumps. The City of Taipei lies at the center of the Taipei basin. With many streams and rivers passing through the basin and flowing out to sea, the region is prone to flooding during the rainy seasons of summer and autumn. Controlling the excess water is critical to maintaining the safety of citizens and infrastructure, so the city government builds pumping stations in low-lying areas and near main waterway outlets to accelerate the discharge of excess water during flooding. At the Jingmei River pumping station, Logan distributor Formosa Fluid Power has supplied a pumping system that utilizes Logan LC314 and LC318 Bell-Housing Power Take-off (PTO) clutches to reliably transmit power from CAT C27 diesel engines and other engines to the water pumps through Flender gear boxes. The Challenge:  Many pumping stations use Twin Disc style mechanical clutches, a technology that has remained practically unchanged since the 1940s. Mechanical clutches require manual engagement via a lever arm that is usually in a position that is difficult to operate. The San Francisco Fire Department’s Fireboat No. 3 / the St. Francis, is 88 ft. long and has a beam of 25 ft., and with an 18,000-gallon-per-minute pumping capacity - is easily the largest municipal firefighting boat on the West Coast - using 3 Logan LC318 bell housing PTO clutches. While the St. Francis acts as any other fireboat in the port of San Francisco, its main function is to act as a mobile pumping station for city water, with the ability to plug into the city’s water system should a major earthquake cause a disruption of the system. At 18,000 gallons per minute, the St. Francis has enough power to pressurize the cities fire hydrants in the event they are dismantled during an earthquake. “The pumps run off the rear of the engines, and the propellers run off the front of the engine”, says Andrew Logan, President and CEO of Logan Clutch Corporation. Manure is stored in large lagoons so biological processes can transform the animal waste into a usable fertilizer. The manure pumping industry functions by assisting farmers with their pumping needs. The bulk of the business is in the spring and fall. For Marcel Wassink of Perfection Pumping Corporation in Alberta, Canada, the narrow pumping season means it is crucial to have consistent uptime, reliability, and low maintenance on his key pumping equipment.  Logan FlexaDriveTM provides additional power sources for auxiliary equipment The Challenge:  Prior to making the switch to the FlexaDrive, Wassink was using a live PTO off his CAT D7 tractor to power his hydraulic systems.  The hydraulic PTO takeoff that he was using simply couldn’t stand up to the demands of his hydraulic system, leading to frequent downtime. When this setup gave out, Wassink began using the power take-off from his John Deere 8R 250 HP tractor. This configuration came with its own set of issues, specifically that the tractor was being used entirely as a stationary PTO for days at a time. “We were paying almost $75 in depreciation for every hour using that hydraulic pump,” says Wassink. Fast supply vessels are an important part of the supply chain for any type of Wind Farm or Offshore Drilling operation, and each vessel is required to have Dynamic Positioning (DP) capabilities to control its position relative to a specific position, drill rig, wind turbine tower or other support vessel.  Dynamic positioning (DP) is a computer-controlled system to automatically maintain a vessel’s position and heading by using its own propellers and thrusters. Thrustmaster of Texas Inc. is a major supplier of DP thruster systems to builders of DP vessels.  Larger and faster supply vessels (upwards of 200 ft. with speeds over 25 knots) require larger DP systems. One Thrustmaster system, the 250 Horsepower Thrustmaster 30TT250AL, uses a hydraulic motor powered by a large hydraulic axial piston pump (180 cc per revolution). Sandwiched between the hydraulic motor and Durst gearbox is a Logan 1200 Series, air actuated, Direct Drive PTO Clutch to provide on-demand engagement-disengagement to the thruster. The Durst gear box is driven by the vessel’s generator sets.  Logan Clutches lower fuel costs, lower emissions and reduce wear and tear on components The Logan PTO clutch enables the system to be disconnected when the DP thruster is not required, which results in lower fuel costs, noise, and wear and tear on the hydraulic motor and hydraulic system.
